I’m Not Dead

Yes, this blog has suffered much neglect throughout this past month of November. No, I’m not head because I’m here writing this post.

I’ve slacked off once more on the blogging front and it’s probably done me no good, but it’s coming to the end of the year and I feel everyone has the right to go into slacker mode. So please forgive me, but fear not, I haven’t been totally slack. I’ve actually relaunched my online portfolio, stylecomment.com, with a new design and a new host. (Kickass hosting by WebHostRegulator)

So head on over and check out the fruits of my labour. Let me know your thoughts on the design in the comments.

Updates and Such

Here’s one of those update posts, yet again. So what’s going on in my world? Well, sans the offline crap I’m here to fill you in on what’s going on in the land of the interweb.

I recently purchased reseller hosting account through ResellerScene for an insanely cheap price (using coupcon code noway in case you’re interested) and transferred over one of my domains (stylecomment.com) to the new host. If you’re really nosy and want to know why - it’s all part of my new plans for expanding my freelancing outfit. Anywho, once the DNS servers had propagated, I tried to view the site on the new host. No good. Apparently my ISPs DNS cache hadn’t updated to the new nameservers; so I flushed my local DNS cache to no avail. It seemed a reboot was in order, so that’s exactly what I did. Still no go on the new domain even after the reboot; it seems something strange was going. So here I am multiple reboots, a bunch of ipconfig /flushdns commands and a couple of winsock reinstalls and IP stack rebuilds later still viewing the site on the old server. What a wonderful experience it is trying to gain potential clients when your site is [temporarily] down.
Edit: The nameservers have finally propagated at ISP level. Hooray for progress.

In other non-rant news, I’ve been linked to by SnapSucks.org. They stand by my opinion that Snap previews, do indeed suck. So get behind the cause and get blogging! Join the movement and be heard. Put bluntly by SnapSucks.org - Snap previews suck mule testicles. ‘Nuff said.

DIY Myspace

Ever dreamed of being the next Myspace? Elgg’s here to help fulfill your dreams.

The last few years have seen social networks become the internet’s most popular applications, with sites such as Myspace and Facebook dominating the market. But what if you had the chance to enjoy some of this success too, but haven’t a clue where to start? That’s where Elgg comes in.

Elgg is a PHP-powered script that helps you set up a fully featured social network in your own web space. You’ll need PHP support and a spare MySQL database. While the software’s still in beta, it’s proving to be a robust and stable release.

Why roll-your-own social networking site? In short: control. You maintain absolute control over the look and feel of the whole site, decide which modules to add and which to leave out. You can even change the entire layout of the page template with just a little HTML savvy and some elbow grease.

Why join MySpace when you can be MySpace?

Edit: For those who don’t know their PHP’s from their MySQL’s and such, here’s a guide for getting you underway in the social networking scene using Elgg.

Captcha Catastrophe

They say that sex sells. Spammers just took that phrase one step further.

You’ve got to hand it to spammers. If they’re not creative, then I don’t know what they are because their latest scam is brilliant even if I do say so myself.

For those out there who don’t know what Captchas are, you’ve almost definitely completed one at some point in your travels around the internet. A captcha is a disfigured image, usually containing a word, that aims to prevent spammers from automating actions such as leaving Viagra comments on your blog or email signups.

Captchas have seen widespread success in fulfilling their purpose and the spammers have had to adjust their tactics; and that’s what they’ve done with this latest booby-trap.

But what makes this method so unique? What if I told you that you could watch an attractive woman strip and all you had to do was decipher disfigured images of words? That’s where the deception lies.

They’ve created a game with the concept that you, the user, decipher captcha images and reap the rewards of seeing a woman in ever increasing states of nudity.

So, every time you decipher a captcha you get the added flattery of nudity and the fulfillment that you’ve allowed spammers to place another comment on yet another blog, or better still, set up a free email account which will be used to send hundreds more spam emails to your inbox. Great job.

Link Exchange

You probably didn’t notice that I added a ‘Link Exchange’ section to my blog’s sidebar recently, but it’s for a purpose. I’ve decided to start a Link Exchange with other bloggers / websites. I will implement a more elegant solution shortly, but for now the sidebar’s going to have to do.

There aren’t any ‘rules’ for the link exchange; all I ask is that you link back to me with the anchor text of your choice and then notify me via the comments and I will reciprocate your link. Please specify anchor text or I will simply use your name or your site’s/blog’s name. No pornographic, racist or other sites of that type please. Refusal often offends.

Backlinks a great way to build PR, so what are you waiting for?

PayPerPost IZEA Rage Part 2

Since my last rant about PayPerPost, a few things have changed:

  • PayPerPost is now known as IZEA (read more)
  • Name changes apparently now make your company more idiotic.

If you remember from my previous PayPerPost Rage post, I was trying to get a sponsored post approved. I fixed up every possible factor negatively affecting it’s approval under the sun; yet here I am again today to tell you the next stupid reason in the long list of why the same post was rejected. I kid you not with this reason:

Thank you for your interest in PPP. Before we can approve any paid post you must make sure there are dates individually stamped to each separate post. This allows us to verify post date authenticity.

Thanks,

P @ PPP

Firstly, who the hell is this P guy? Why is a letter assigned to approving my post, whatever happened to Crystal? Anyway, the reason stated is: Make sure post dates are stamped individually to each post. I think the idea behind this opportunity was to actually infuriate bloggers, not necessarily make them want to use PayPerPost’s service again. I have never had an issue with dates not being individually stamped, so why bother now?

This makes me wonder if sponsored blogging is even worth the headache.
